Model 1889 Magazine Loading Swiss Infantry Rifle

Full length, Swiss Model 1889 Schmidt-Rubin, repeating Infantry rifle.  Twelve shot box magazine with straight pull mechanism.  Chambered in the obsolete 7.5 x 53.5 round. (UK Section 58ii) No license required to hold. Fully matching serial number 38337.  Comes with original leather sling.

These replaced the Vetterli tube magazine design which, had become out dated as the main line infantry weapon, for the Swiss Army.  An ingenious straight pull mechanism which works flawlessly every time.  Partial extraction is aided by the turning motion developed by the internal cam within the bolt body.  The act of reloading is a simple two motion process. Pull the bolt to the rear by the handle which protrudes on the RHS of the rear of the bolt, this removes the spent case and ejects it. Then simply and positively thrust the bolt handle forwards to pick up the next round from the magazine below and push it into the chamber.  Quick and easy for the operator.  By a switch on the underside of the action the magazine can be removed from the battery position so as to effectively turn the rifle into a single shot weapon and save ammunition or provide the state of mind required for target or practice shooting.

The design was perfected very early if one considers the kind of weapons that other countries were fielding around the world at the same time. But, what else would one expect from the Swiss!  Lets face it, making incredibly intricate clocks was, practically a national past time !  (Completely non-fact based statement)

The rifle measures 51.1/4″ long.  The round blued barrel is 30.1/2″ long and the Pull length is 12.1/4″ to centre.  The receiver is marked with the serial number which is repeated in all the right places and is “38337”  On the outside of the receiver body are the three distinctive grooves which easily identify the model.  Bolt release catch to the RHS rear of the receiver and the bolt has the equally easily recognised large cocking ring to the rear.  Excellent full length walnut stock with several Swiss stampings and finger groves.  The action is smooth and functions as expected.  Many of the steel components have the Swiss inspection and acceptance marks clearly stamped into them.  Red early hard rubber bolt handle.

Quadrant adjustable rear sight graduated from 300 to 2000 meters.  Simple inverted V on a block front sight.  Front stacking hook and bayonet lug, steel contoured butt-plate and period leather sling in good order.  The sling has the makers stampe visible on the outer side.  The bore is good with clean lands, there is minor corrosion within the grooves but it is possible that this may improve with some use.  A great collectors rifle and an intricate piece of Swiss engineering.
