Percussion Rifle by Green. 43″ in overall length.  Barrel length 27″.  Approx’ 70 Bore.  The rifle is half stocked with a dark horn tipped for-end cap.  The butt-stock has two unusual features, firstly a pronounced raised cheek piece and a sliding patch box.  The walnut stock has brass furniture and butt-plate.  The trigger guard has  a simple finial design to the front end.  Brass oval on top of wrist which appears to have a simple “2” remaining on its face.  The butt- stock has a strong tiger stripe to it beneath the glossy surface.  There are some small losses to the stock and the traces of  filled holes on the opposite side of the stock to the lock, which suggest a holding plate, such as seen on old military weapons.

The lock is fairly plain with strong engraving which includes a serpent and a sunburst.  Centrally placed is the makers name.  Cocking piece has a very clear monster’s head engraved upon it with a cross hatched thumb piece.  All of the screws about the lock are in some way engraved.  There is a small nipple in good condition which is clear through. The lock holds well on both of its two positions.  The rear sight consists of a simple lower sight, then a flip up longer range second.  Simple German silver fore-sight dovetailed into the front of the barrel, about one inch behind the muzzle.

The hexagonal damascus steel barrel has a rib on the underside which carries the two steel rod guides, and there is a brass pipe where the rod enters the stock.  The original steel rod is still with the weapon and is full length.  The bore is in wonderful condition with clear, strong, very deep, seven grove rifling.  A shooting man would have trouble resisting the temptation to see how this weapon performs.

The Second Rifle by W.H.Edwards. Active 18543 -56 in Devenport.  Sporting gunmaker.  The overall length of this rifle is 52.1/2″.  The barrel is exactly three foot long.  The weapon is half stocked in English walnut with a fine grain pattern about the butt-stock.  Underneath the barrel is a full length steel (probably original ) loading rod.  The barrel is of damascus steel in a hexagonal form measuring 3/4″ across.  Rifling within the bore is good and is of three groove with some pitting but nothing serious.  The barrel has a simple fore-sight dovetailed in about half an inch from the muzzle.  The rear sight is of a simple construction with a fixed sight set to about 50 meters, then two leaves which are marked 100 and 150 accordingly.

Behind the top tang of the barrel is a blank silver escutcheon.  The butt-stock is checkered as is the fore-end.  Plain metal fore-end cap – possibly a replacement.

The lock is flat and engraved with  floral swirls and the scene of a stalking cat.  Above the scene is the makers name.  An interesting long rifle.
