.303 S.M.L.E MK 3 Rifle…………………….SOLD

Excellent MkIII * Enfield by Lithgow.

S/n 38374 in .303 cal’. Marked on the right side wrist strap “MA / LITHGOW / S.M.L.E. / III* / 1942”.  MA being the Lithgow factory code. Of standard Enfield specification with loading guide, no magazine cut-off. Matching bolt, bolt handle showing signs of usage – not refinished. The rest of the rifle is refinished, with an even black arsnenal all over finish on all metal components, including ten shot magazine, action, barrel band and Lithgow nosecap. (stacking swivle omitted and solid block remaining in its place behind bayonet lug on nose cap)  The refinish is confirmed by stamping on butt of “R / MA / 2/46”

The butt plate is brass with trap containing correct brass oil bottle for 1942. Other stampings on the butt are “MA / ——- / S.M.L.E” Then a large “III*” and large “1942” below. The stock forend and guard are made of the correct Australian Coachwood. About the breech and on the top rear hand guard are the correct brass pins, only fitted in Australia as the timber was regarded as slightly less strong than the Italian Walnut used on the British made rifles.

Correct rear sight marked 200 to 2000yds and sight protector. Fore end timber marked with inspectors cartouches underneath. The breech is marked with the correct crossed flags with “L” above and “P” below for Lithgow Proof. On taking of the hand guard there are many proof and inspectors marks and the caliber markings “.303”  Standard weight barrel, with replacement barrel s/n 17519 explaining the excellent bore condition found within. The bore is very good, bright with sharp rifling, and no pitting. The action is smooth and the rifle is in excellent working order. Correct green canvas sling.
