No 4 Mk I by Fazakerley

Standard British Infantry rifle of the latter part of the Second world War.  Chambered in .303 British with a ten shot detachable box magazine and Enfield bolt system.  This is the rifle that took Europe back from the Nazis and eventually defeated its counterpart, the K98 Mauser.  Standard military specification with basic aperture battle sight.  Fully stocked in walnut, the stock actually comprising of four separate parts.  The butt is capped of with a brass butt-plate with cleaning trap.

A standard 44″ in overall length.  The round blacked barrel is 25″ long with bayonet locating studs at the muzzle.  The trigger Pull is approx’ 13.1/4″ to centre.  The Enfield bolt has a removable bolt head which is a number 3 fitting.  Loading bridge over action which acts as a guide to stripper clip loading. Rectangular cocking piece.  Safety to rear LHS of action.

The outer LHS action wall is marked;- “No 4 Mk I”  The LH outer of the wrist socket is marked “R O F / 43  / AA25329.”  The serial number is matching on the rear of the bolt arm.  Smooth trigger with magazine release catch within trigger guard.  Gas release hole to LHS of receiver.  The action has lost a good 80% of its finish and is turning a grey / light brown with age.  Twin sling swivels with period canvas sling with brass fittings attached.  The sling is clearly marked on one side;- “J.& A.H. 1944 broad arrow”  Basic flip over “L-shaped”  aperture battle sight with two fixed distances.  Solid bolt head.  Front sight protected by steel ears.

This rifle has been fitted from day one with a standard two grove bore.  It has remained clean and undamaged with continuous rifling and no pitting but a very small degree of slight misting creeping in toward the muzzle. The woodwork does show all the normal signs of an active life in the military with a well executed round repair just in front of the trigger guard.
