Collectors Quality No 4 Mk I by Maltby for 1942

Of standard manufacturing specifications for Maltby.  Chambered in .303 with the Enfield bolt mechanism.  Equipped with a detachable ten-shot box magazine and a “0” marked bolt head.  The bolt face appearing unused and bright.  Solid bolt head with matching serial number stamped into the rear face of bolt arm.  One strange Maltby feature is the smooth rectangular cocking piece fitted to this particular example. These were discontinued for obvious reasons after reports from the field.

The rifle itself measures 44.1/4″ in overall length.  The round, blacked barrel is 25.1/4″ long and the Pull  length is 13.1/4″ to center.  The action is finished in a dark grey phosphate finish which has withstood any attempts by corrosion to take hold. The wrist socket is marked on the LHS below the safety catch.  There is an inverted crows-foot over the following two lines; “M  1942 / S 19628”  The plain “M” on its own is the only obvious indication of the rifle having originated from Royal Ordnance Factory Maltby.

Fine condition hardwood stock showing little sign of usage. Alloy type grey metal butt-plate with trap for cleaning equipment. One-piece fore-end and two piece handguard over the barrel. (The rear section being fluted)  The woodwork shows many production and inspection marks with a clear crows-foot or broad arrow marks in more than one place.  The rifle is equipped with two sling swivels and a fore-end cap.  The front sight is guarded by solid milled sight protectors and the barrel has the lugs to take the No4 spike bayonet.  The rear sight is the 300 to 600 “L-shaped” flip over battle type sight.

The bore is an excellent two-grove type with strong clear rifling and no pitting or misting.  The action is mechanically fine and smooth to operate. Complete with a 1942 marked War Department canvas sling with manufacturers initials and brass fittings. Altogether an opportunity to acquire a fine apparently unused Maltby No 4 Mk I .303 British Second World War rifle.
