Good No 4 Mk 1 / 2 Bolt Action Rifle built by Fazakerley

A good solid regular No 4 British battle rifle built at the Fazakerley plant in May of 1945.  Later reconditioned with updates and improvements becoming a No 4 Mk I /2.  The marks are not easy to read on the action body but could show the update happening in 1950. The main set of markings actually read; ” No4 Mk I/ 2 (F) / CC26910-A.”

Chambered in .303 with a ten round detachable box magazine. Enfield type safety catch to rear LHS of action.  Rectangular fluted cocking piece (Savage).  The serial number; “CC 26910A” stamped into LHS wrist and partially repeated on rear face of curved bolt arm.  No “1” fitting bolt head.  The rifle is fully stocked in beech with a fluted two piece handguard.  Stock is in very good condition with few signs of use; there is a small, contemporary armoury repair adjacent to the safety catch, which is holding well.  On the underside of the fore-end, just behind the front band, is a broad arrow, War Department acceptance stamp and a serial number, which does not look to be the same as the rifle.

The barrel that was fitted at the FTR is a 5-grove RH twist item.  Strong clean rifling –  not pitted.  Overall the rifle is 44.1/4″ long.  The round blued barrel is 25″ long with bayonet lugs.  The trigger pull is 13.1/4″ to center.   Guarded front sight with Mk III pressed steel rear sight incorporating battle sight.  The magazine is numbered to a different rifle.  The steel butt plate has a trap in it allowing storage of cleaning equipment, oil bottle and original pull through.

One hint to this rifles history is that it carries, on the crest of the receiver, a barely visible star with an “W” within it stamp.  It could be the “cord worn” stamp, the reason why it went to FTR  it is difficult to tell. The internal condition of the barrel shows it could have been re-barrelled at FTR.  All the furniture is correct and the rifle comes with a canvas issue sling in good usable condition.  Mechanically fine and ready for a further life on the ranges.  British proofed.
