British SMLE Rifle by BSA & Co

Built under contract by BSA & Co this Short Magazine Lee Enfield survives today in excellent condition and benefits from a recently fitted replacement South African barrel.  Marking on the barrel suggest it was actually made in 1952.  Of standard military specification being chambered in .303 with a ten-shot detachable box magazine.  The bolt is force matched to the rifle and has the later square cocking piece.  As is often the way with contract produced weapons the BSA stacked rifles logo appears on the upper surface of the bolt arm.

It is also fairly obvious that this rifle has been fitted with a replacement set of woodwork, which although in fine condition bears few official markings, except for a 10% stores examination mark and an combined “D/E” marking.  Both these markings are on the underside of the for-end.  Apart from those mentioned there are no other markings upon the woodwork.  Having said that this is an extremely nice set of woodwork and adds much to the feel and look of the rifle.  The classic weak spot has been repaired on the RHS beside the action, between loading bridge cut-out and rear face, facing wrist.  No other dings, scratches or dents, and a pleasing satin finish.

The rifle carries the serial number, “59547” on the receiver.  Interestingly this rifle has the magazine cut-off in place – this may have been retro-fitted.  Brass butt-plate with trap for cleaning equipment (A/F).  Twin sling swivels with canvass second world war sling fitted.  Nose-cap incorporating bayonet stud and fore sight protection has the same serial number, But the “9” is inverted, reading as a “6”  this has to be a factory error!  Standard ramp rear sight without windage adjustment, graduated from 200 to 2000 yards.  Long range aperture sights not fitted.  Dished ear protection to rear sight.  Correct early hinged mid-band holds front swivel.

Serrated trigger and magazine release catch within trigger guard.  Safety to rear LHS of action marked “III”.  The most important feature, as mentioned earlier is the replacement South African barrel and the condition of the bore.  It looks little used and devoid of any faults.  Sharp, strong rifling, no pitting or misting.  This rifle should prove to be an excellent shooter.

A good looking rifle which should not only provide pleasure in owning it but some satisfaction upon the range.  Also and interesting component of a Enfield or military rifle collection.
