World War II  Jungle Carbines in .303

2 x No 5s 006

Both carbines of standard specification, chambered in .303.

Enfield Jungle Carbine with stock to the left in Dark Walnut.  When this rifle arrived from the USA it was wrapped in army issue green oiled bandage, this has preserved it beautifully.

2 x No 5s 032

Serial number S 7771.   Bolt action with ten shot detachable magazine.  Overall length 39. 5/8″  Round barrel 20.1/2″ including flash hider.  Standard length butt stock with pressed steel butt cap containing rubber butt-pad.  Sling mount on side of butt cap.  On the underside of the wrist and further down the butt are numerous Enfield inspectors stamps, the broard arrow mark and other such stampings which are all quite legible.

The action side walls at the rear have the classic lightening cuts to reduce weight and the bolt has the hollow type head.  On removal of the wood work both of these carbines were found to have the correct knox form to the barrels, meaning they are and always were genuine carbines.  The side wall of the action is correctly and very clearly marked in electro-pencil (typical of Fazakerley) as follows;  “No5 MKI ROF (F) / 10/45  S 7771”  The rear of the bolt handle carries the same number.  The removable bolt head has a “1” stamped onto it.  Other classic Carbine features include the specifically graduated rear sight which is marked from 2 to 800 yards. It also sports the classic stylish No5 Flash-hider and bayonet fitting for the Bowie type short bayonet.

2 x No 5s 037

Altogether this rifle shows all the dings and dents associated with service life and some mild edge wear on the metal parts, with the exception of the magazine which has lost more of its finish.  There is the normal forward sling swivel and band and the barrel has retained a good amount of its finish.  The fore end is the non-capped type.  The action is sound and the bore is very good showing no pitting or rusting or even misting.  An altogether complete good Enfield Number Five Jungle carbine, ready to use, with current British proof marks.

2 x No 5s 009

Serial Number  W 4322.  Overall length 39.5/8″.  Round barrel  20 .1/2″ including flash hider.  Standard length butt stock.

What is immediately obvious is that this rifle is stocked in a light coloured wood.   This was known as ” Silk-Wood” it was chosen as a replacement for the standard British Walnut used on most other rifles, due to shortages.  It is a fine grained dense timber, and in comparison to the above carbine it actually weighs a couple of pounds more. It also displays a pleasing pearlescent “tiger-stripe” in the butt-stock.   The stock has only one or two dents on it and is in extremely good condition.  Just behind the trigger guard are some Enfield inspectors marks and forward of the sling swivel the serial number has been stamped into the underside of the fore-end.

The action shows the classic lightening cuts associated with the Enfield carbines and has the following electro-pencilled into it; ” No5 MKI ROF (F)  /  6/46  W4322″  The finish all over the metalwork of this carbine is matt black and is even and unscratched.  There is little high edge wear or chipping.  It reall seems to be in very good condition.  This carbine is fitted with the correct Carbine sights graduated to 800 yards.  The bolt handle has the serial number electro-pencilled on the rear of the handle.  The removable bolt head is another “1” marked piece.  The knob on the bolt handle is the correct hollow type.

2 x No 5s 0252 x No 5s 026

It has the classic bayonet lug and carbine flash hider on the muzzle.   The bore is excellent and really shows little sign of usage since the great conflict it was made to be involved in ended.  Another item that seems to have laid dormant  for many years.

Two excellent carbines looking for a new home, for either the shooter who appreciates the light or the dark stocked rifles.
