Late War CZ built K98 with scrubbed receiverDSC_0398

In excellent condition with the receiver markings removed in a highly professional manner, a late war K98.  This rifle came out of the CZ works Brno.  Although in very good war production guise it seems that it was recalled into the works and the original markings on the receiver were removed by machine.  Then the work has been refinished.  A standard K98 in 8mm with an internal 5-shot magazine.  Mauser bolt system, equipped with the Mauser flag safety system.  The rifle is stocked in one of the late war laminated stocks which are incredibly strong, with a short handguard of the same material.

The rifle has matching serial numbers on the bolt stub and the receiver which read “4940 i”  The side wall of the action is marked with the makers name and reads; “CESKSLOVENSKA, ZBROJOVKA,A.S.,BRNO”   The rifle measures 43.1/2″ in overall length.  The round blued barrel is 23.5/8″ long (600mm)  and the trigger pull is 13″ to centre.  The finish on all the components is very strong except the butt-plate, that has turned to bare metal with a small amount of corrosion on one side.  The furniture is mostly late issue.  The butt-plate having the bolt strip-down hole in its side.

Interestingly this K98 looked like it was going east.  The trigger guard is the large bow type, designed to accommodate thick gloves in harsh conditions.  The floor plate is a one-piece pressed steel item which does not open, but retains excellent finish.  The finish around the crown of the barrel hints that this rifle may not have seen service at all!  It is very good, the bore and chamber are perfect to the human eye, it looks un-shot.  Other late war components, or lack of, are the welded front band and the lack of strip-down disk in the butt.  The front sight has a sprung steel hooded cover to protect it.

The stock is in very good condition with an oiled finish.  There is a number and a production code on the RHS of the butt.  The number is “1042” and the code looks like “Cht” (unknown?)  By this stage of the conflict the weapons producers had done away with frivolities like the locking screws on the underside trigger guard.  This K comes with one of the rubber muzzle caps of which three were issued with each rifle.  The action is smooth and mechanically fine.  The bore is crisp and very clean.  A highly tidy K98 which should make an excellent shooter.
