Very Interesting low numbered K98k from Brunn AG Bystrica

This is a very interesting example of a late war K98k from Waffen Werke Brunn AG Bystrica.  The particular point of interest, and its rather fundamental,  with this rifle is that, in Richard D Laws’ book “Backbone of the Wehrmacht,” he details rifles of this era and build should all be 4-digit serial numbers with a double letter suffix.  This clearly is not, proving the exception to the rule. The serial number which is matching all over is “751 a”  It is clear, undisturbed and not falsified in any way.  All the signs that the stampings are original check out.

The stock is a late war, standard laminated, semi-pistol grip unit with strip-down disc in the butt and cupped steel butt-plate.  There are however no visible stampings or other markings to the stock.  The only visible mark is within the strap cut-out which looks to be a single “a” but it is very much in the style of the marking codes found on the inside of other German stocks. In cleaning, the action and barrel were removed from the stock and the serial number was repeated within the channel and on the inside of the short hand guard.  So, once again this stock is matching to the rifle.  The only other known explanation to the lack of external markings is sanding, but, the stock is “full” behind the strip-down disc and no indent is detected by touch – usually the case when the Soviets were involved.  Last possible theory is then that they just ran out of time and the rifle had to go straight to the troops on the front.  Unfortunately, the time machine has not yet been perfected that could help me solve this conundrum.

So fully matching K.  Chambered in 7.92 x 57mm.  Internal 5-shot magazine with Mauser bolt system incorporating a three position flag safety.  Superbly strong and efficient and in fine working order.   The rifle itself measures 43.1/2″ in overall length.  The round blued barrel is 24″ long.  The trigger Pull measured to centre is 13″.  Model designation on outside RHS of action simply reads “Mod.98”  The main serial number is stamped in full adjacent to the on the RHS of the receiver ring; “751 /a”  Single Nazi acceptance stamp of Eagle with wings spread over circled Swastika.  The crest of the receiver is marked the a Waffenamt which consists of and “Eagle over WaA80 ” which is the correct stamp for this rifle.

The bolt matches the receiver in its entirety with the numbers stamped on the bolt arm stem, the bolt shroud, the safety and the cocking piece.  On strip-down trigger components were also observed with the last two digits stamped into them accordingly.  The trigger guard and magazine floor-plate are also matching and of stamped steel construction. The main fixing screws still have the screw cut-outs for the locking screws which are present.  Bolt release catch number “51”. Rear sight graduated from 100 to 2000 meters. The main components of the rear sight are also matched with the spring being numbered “751”, the underside of the main graduated ramp also and the sliding cross bar having just “51”. Further matching components include the two barrel bands which are also stamped and welded components.  It has the hooded front sight and bayonet lug under.

Condition is good all over.  Wear is consistent with its age showing no signs of re-finishing on the metal work.  The stock may have been varnished at some time.  Cut-out for side mounted sling and side mount for sling on mid band.  This is a highly well preserved rifle showing a fully matching serial number in all the correct places for this stage in the war.  The action is fine and the rifle proofed.  The bore shows signs of use but as is normal for this manufacturer it is a high grade bore with strong rifling with the minimum of disruption. Ready to shoot as you watch its value increase.
