A Good Japanese Type 38 Arisaka Rifle

DSC_0552

Serial number 39505.  Mauser type bolt action rifle with five-shot internal magazine, chambered in 6.5mm x 50SR.  This is the long rifle measuring 50.1/4″ in overall length.  Barrel length in 31.1/4″/  The trigger pull is 13.1/8″.  Straight arm bolt finished in the white.  The Mum is intact as are the type markings below it on the receiver.  Blueing is strong on both the barrel and the action.  The trigger guard is the only portion the rifle to have lost finish, yet the magazine floor plate is still holding a strong blue.

The stock is the typical two part local hardwood item.  It shows what appears to be a cross-grain repair around the area of the action which has been correctly plugged over the screws.  The full length stock has finger grooves either side of the rear sight and the water drain grove to the RHS of the receiver.  Action cover absent.  Plain steel butt-plate with good finish remaining.  The degree of denting and damage caused by military use is much less than the average example, somehow this classic rifle has eluded the normal hammering they receive.  There are some marks but none so terrible to cause concern.

The serial number is stamped into the LHS of the outer action wall, adjacent to the Nagoya Arsenal marking.  At the other end of the serial number is the series marking which is that of the 28th series.  The bolt is mismatched but, proof was tested with these two main components, so head – space is correct and it should prove accurate.  At the rear of the bolt assembly is the notched safety with the elaborate circular spiral pattern.  Bolt release on rear LHS of the action.  Original lacquer finish on stock and handguard.

The rear sight is the ladder type and graduated from 5 to 24 in the upright position and is the open “V”-type aperture.  The front sight is an inverted V mounted within protective ears.  Underneath the barrel is a full length cleaning rod.  Sling swivels front and rear with fore-end nose-cap incorporating bayonet mount under.  The last 16″ of the barrel are exposed and retain a strong colour. Four grove RH twist rifling with no pitting or misting.

A good representative example of the Type 38 rifle used in many conflicts by the Japanese and a mainstay of their Imperial military forces.
