Finish Nagant M28 Civil Guards Rifle

Built on an Imperial Russian hexagonal receiver by the state owned Finnish Tikka factory for the Civil Guard but, later absorbed by the Finish Army in the Continuation War.  It is possible by evidence upon the stock that this rifle may also, at some stage, been in the hands of the Germans.  Chambered in 7.62 x 54R with a 5-shot single stack magazine, hexagonal receiver and Mosin bolt system.

This Finnish Model 28 rifle is 46.3/4″ in overall length.  The round blued barrel is approximately 27″ long.  Trigger Pull to centre is 13.1/2″  Fully stocked in a single piece straight gripped tock with hand guard over barrel.  The Mosin-Nagant bolt has the shortened “stubby” length straight bolt arm with the early Izhevsk Bow and Arrow mark (pre 1928)  The bolt rib has an original rifle serial number struck out; “9639”  Plain hexagonal receiver (only new CIP marking)  The barrel shank however tells a story; – “SY / T (within a triangle)”  The first mark is for the Finish Civil Guard and the second an early Tikka factory mark.  On the LHS of the receiver is the serial number, “21447” and above that is very small “<R>” mark.  To the rear of the same is the boxed “SA” mark for Finnish Army ownership.  On the obverse of the shank is another long number; “S 93202” and two circles winged “S”.  This number could be an old scope number; usually they are struck out, but the scope numbers always started with an “S” as this does.

Within the finger grove on the RHS of the forend is a circled “SYT” mark this is the finish stock makers mark.  Both sides of the butt-stock show markings, both are fairly illegible but the larger of the two, on the LHS, centrally placed could be the roundel which stands for the “English Contract.” Referring specifically to stocks.  The stock has the steel escutcheon slot covers fixed by small screws.  On the underside of the wrist, just behind the trigger guard there is a clear “H” marking. Another interesting aspect of this rifle and its condition are the barrel bands; they are both subtly case colour hardened and retain some colour.  Full length cleaning rod stored under barrel.

Steel curved butt-plate with a mild stamping of “47” centrally upon its face, Izhevsk marked on the tang.  Front sight protected by steel ears.  Early M91 curved sights with slide – double sided.  The early ramp for the rear sight is marked on both sides with both meters and arshini. Full length cleaning rod stored under barrel.  The blueing on the action and barrel is strong but just thinning at the muzzle possibly from bayonet wear.  The stock is in good condition as made in a decent hardwood but obviously shows all the normal signs of a military life.  Action mechanically fine.  Good bore for a rifle of this age.  Freshly CIP proofed.

An interesting and highly sought after collectible Finnish Rifle.
