Excellent Model 91/30 Rifle by Westinghouse USA

A Mosin-Nagant built by Westinghouse of New England USA.  These are an above average build of the standard Imperial Russian Mosin-Nagant provided in 1915 to send aid to the White Russians of the Tsarist Forces embroiled in the Russian Revolution.  This rifle shows all the early features including the hexagonal receiver.  It is a full length Infantry Rifle with cleaning rod and full length woodwork.  Condition is so high it is doubtful if this weapon has been seriously used or even issued.  The only other possibility is a refurb by the Finns when they captured it later on in its timeline.

Measuring 51″ in overall length.  The barrel is approximately 31.1/2″ long and the Pull to centre is 13.3/4″  The rifle fell into the hands of the Finnish army at some stage and has been restocked with one of the Fins highly technical stocks which also looks extremely unused.  Technical because the Fins had engineered a stock with a finger-joint centrally placed along its length. This was designed overcome the ill effects of getting soaking wet in the snow, then drying, which would cause distortion of the timber acting on the barrel. Any undue pressures on a long barrel such as this would comprise accuracy.  So just in front of the finger grooves is a very neat finger joint produced by machine, which counteracts any movement that might have a tendency of creeping in.  They repeated this on many of their rifles.

This rifle is chambered in 7.62 x 54R with a five shot single stacked magazine.  Short straight arm bolt with clear Izhevsk Bow and Arrow (pre 1928) marking.  Original number struck out. The main proportion of the receiver is hexagonal and the barrel shank is round.  The shank has the early Westinghouse markings which read as follows;- “NEW ENGLAND / Imperial Eagle / WESTINGHOUSE / COMPANY / 1915 t / No /108548″  There are numerous other inspectors marks and letters of unknown meaning surrounding the shank but most notably there is the boxed ownership mark of the Finnish Army the “SA.” Bolt knob handle marked “8548”.  Muzzle with 1/4″ back bore.

The original standard military iron sights are graduated in Arshini  which are struck out on the LHS of the ramp with the later equivalents on the RHS. There are far longer distances marked on the rear of the sight which come into use in the upright position.  Blacking is strong all over with no high edge wear.  The bolt is finished in the white as it the cleaning rod stored under the barrel.  Wire sling swivels and steel butt-plate.  The bore has strong deep rifling which is dark within the grooves but appears little used.  This is a fine version of the famous Mosin-Nagant which is now over 100 years old but looks able to continue shooting for the next 100 years as well.  Sturdy and reliable – so anyone could use it….. Freshly CIP proofed 2022.  One would struggle to find one in better condition.
