A Rare M95 Infantry Rifle & Bayonet

Steyr M95 f 379 002

Serial number  7023W  Overall length 50″.  Barrel length 30.1/4″  Trigger Pull Length 13.3/8″.  The interesting thing about this particular rifle is the fact that it has lost all its external finish, yet the bore is in excellent condition.  It is all you would expect from a brand new rifle, straight out of the store.  The bore has 4 grooves and a right hand twist.  There is no frosting, pitting or dirt.  The rifling is strong and uninterrupted with good definition and deep grooves.

There is light pitting in places on the external surfaces but nothing that detracts from the overall aesthetics of the piece as a Classic Collectible Rifle.  The rifle has the clever straight pull bolt system with open top action that accepts a 5 round loading clip, which passes through the action and is discarded when empty. Chambered in 8mm x 56R.  The barrel is marked with a large “S” at the breech end, indicating the chamber has been altered for the “Spitzgeschoss” kind of ammunition.  This is specifically to distinguish it from the earlier unconverted rifles.

This long, slender rifle has two forward barrel bands because of its length.  The mid band has the forward sling swivel fitted to it and the front band, the bayonet lug and stacking hook. The attachment of the bayonet to the rifle is a good secure fit.  The stock appears to be a light coloured Walnut but, the hand guard is elm and possibly from another rifle as, the number stamped into adjacent to the rear sights appears different.  There is also a 2″ long crack in the hand-guard travelling from the rear sight cut-out towards the mid band.  This crack appears to be stable, but should only be mended by an expert.  An idea of the cartridges power is given by the graduations on the ladder sight which go up to 2400 meters.

The serial number appears on the breech end of the barrel, the receiver, and the bolt arm.  A previous number has been ruled out with a blade of some description and the correct number for this rifle added on the opposite side of the butt.  The inspectors initial “K” appears on many of the component parts including the steel but-plate.  The bayonet and scabbard is also available for this rifle, it lacks a matching number, but it is the right model.  It measures 14.5/8″ in length, with a blade length of 9.1/5″  There are tow stamps on the blade, one being a “WG” mark.  The cutting side of the blade is the uppermost when mounted on the rifle.
