Cacarno Model 1938 Short Rifle with folding Bayonet… (F 1000) SOLD

Created on July 14th 2022

Fine example of the Mannlicer-Cacarno Model 38

A good complete  example of the infamous Carcarno in its most attractive form.  Chambered in the standard 6.5 Italian cartridge.  Bolt action requiring the 6-round clip to feed the fixed magazine from above.  In full military specification with a handsome birch stock and hand guard over the barrel. Originally blued steel-work with bolt finished in the white.

The rifle is 40″ long and with bayonet and scabbard fitted becomes 47.1/2″ in total length.  The round barrel is approximately 21.1/2″ long and the trigger Pull is 13″ to centre.  The fore end has finger grooves and a slot on the underside at the muzzle end to allow for storage of the folded bayonet blade.  Steel butt-plate with small trap, side mountings for sling.

Fixed rear sight with calibre marking “CAL 6.5” upward facing.  The barrel knox form is marked with the serial number “OC 7461” above an Italian crowned inspection mark. The crest of the same is marked “GARDONE VT.”  and the obverse being marked “940XVIII”.  Crude safety device to the rear of the bolt – operationally effective.  Bent bolt handle with single stamped “Crown” marking. Illegible cartouche in horizontal rectangular shape on RHS of the butt and a repeat of the serial number horizontally across the rear of the butt.

A folding bayonet comes with the rifle with a steel scabbard.  Dark wood grips.  Numbered along the rea “B4657”.  Single edged with no dings and a plumb brown (Colour) to the finish of the blade.  Single fuller.  Blade folds by depressing thumb button on grip, blade them is pulled forward and folds back on handle.  Will not fold with scabbard in position. Fits well onto bayonet lug on front of stock.

Bore is strong, slightly dark within the groves but with good depth. Finish is good all over – correct for age with no re-finishing attempted.  Wear in all the right places but good colour in protected areas.  Stock has a good shine to it but not too much and just the right feeling of military pre-use expected on a rifle of this era.  Freshly proofed on import to UK ready to go.
