Excellent French MAS 36 Service Rifle

In wonderful original standard production specifications.  Chambered in 7.5 x 54mm.  Internal, striper-clip loaded 5-shot magazine.  Designed with a short bolt stroke on the Mauser principle but, with locking lugs relocated to the rear of the action.  This is the main feature that enables the action to be shortened.  The lug cut-outs are actually located in the action bridge to the rear.  To aid in the exercise of producing this faster, short stroke bolt action, the bolt handle is actually bent forwards.  It could be argued, that moving the locking lugs towards the rear of the bolt body would increase the possibility of the bolt rocking in the guides, and a loss in accuracy but, some good results have been recorded using these rifles.

The rifle measures 40.1/4″ in overall length.  The round parkerised barrel is 22.7/8″ long. The trigger pull is just over 12.1/2″ to center.  The entire rifle’s metal components are finished by Parkerising and is in very fine, unworn condition. Redesigned, drop out internal magazine.  Pressed steel stock furniture.  The mid band has a side sling mount in the form of a large ring.  The front end cap has a stacking hook and sight protection.  It also has a storage tube below the fore-end which stores the cruciform spike bayonet.  To fit the bayonet it is removed from its storage position and reversed, then pushed rearward, back into the same tube, where it will lock into place.  Bayonet fitted, the rifle is now 52″ long.  The bayonet is also parkerised and in total is 17″ long.

Excellent four-groove, left-hand twist rifling in fine condition with no pitting and strong rifling.  The flat LHS panel of the magazine is marked as follows; “MAS MLE 1936  /  L 63195.”  Rear tangent type sight graduated from 200 to 1200 meters.   Fine, high condition, Beech stock stained to a dark gold.  No dings to speak of.  Side mounted sling point in the butt stock.  Finger grooves in fore-end.  No wear to contoured steel butt-plate.  This rifle is in such good clean condition that is doubtful that it was ever issued to a soldier. ( I have not seen a better one !   It is a pleasure to offer it.)
