M1892 Berthier Carbine……………SOLD

Created on November 14th 2011

A French 8mm Berthier Carbine  modified in 1927

This neat French carbine is chambered in 8mm Lebel.  37.1/4″ overall in length.  Barrel 17.3/4″.

The action is marked on the LHS with the State arsenals name “Chatellarault Mle 1892.  The barrel is marked with the serial number 42196 with various inspectors marks and on the RHS  “MAC 1934”  The finish overall is very good and looks to be period refinished.

The two piece bolt is numbered to another gun, although the bolt head has the last two digits of the serial number on it, visible when closed down.  The trigger guard plate does carry the serial number as on the breech.

Single piece beech stock with two cross bolts and grasping groves.  The stock in very good condition with an illegible number parallel to the flat steel butt plate.  The butt plate has a nice polished mellow brown to it.  Halfway down the barrel is a barrel band which also holds the carbines saddle ring or sling mount.  The nose cap has a stacking hook and a fixing for a bayonet.

The standard rear sights are graduated from 2 to 10 and then rather hopefully to 20 in the upright ladder position.  The bolt is finished in the white and is nicely polished.

The whole carbine is in very presentable condition and does not appear to have been used since it was reconditioned by the state armoury.

£595.
