M38 Short Swedish Mauser…………..SOLD

Created on November 10th 2011

A purpose built m/38 short Swedish Rifle in 6.5 x 55

This rifle was built in 1942 by the Husqvarna works in Sweden.  Serial numbered 640690 this is correct for 1942 as shown on the breech.

The breech is clearly marked with the Husqvarna crowned “H” logo over, “HUSQVARNA  VAPENFABRIKS / AKTIEBOLAG  / 1942”.  The factory inspectors initals are absent from the LHS of the breech as it was found too difficult to stamp the hardened breeches.  It is, instead, found on the underneath on the sight base. This rifle correctly has the initials “”G.B”  for Gustaf Bjorkenstam who was inspector at the factory until late 1942.  The serial numbers for that date range from 628822 to 667603 this places the breech date nicely within that year.

The finish on the breech is an excellent blue and remains in its entirety.  Strongly contrasting this is the polished bolt with fine chequering on the safety parts, along with the last digits of the serial number.  The bolt has the correct folded down handle for that stage in production of the short rifle.  The remainder of the rifle is finished in the blue.  The rifle has a red beech stock which has the brass bore condition disc set into the RHS of the butt stock.  Any wear on the rest of the blued parts is minimal and the stock has few dents and one small scratch on the wrist about 30mm in length adjacent to the trigger guard.

The stock has grasping grooves in the fore-end and a flat metal butt plate fitted with the last digits of the serial number stamped in 690.  The cleaning rod is in the white and is 22″ long.  The overall length of the rifle is 44″.  The “Pull” is 14″.  Standard rear sights marked with a “T” and front blade sight marked with a “T” and a “O”.

Standard Mauser bolt release with nitre blue spring and standard flag safety. The magazine floor plate is polished in the white and bears a clear Swedish crown acceptance stamp.  There are two blued military sling swivels on the stock  which are about 35mm wide internally.  There are clear inspection stamps behind the trigger guard on the underside of the wrist.  These stamps indicate inspection following rework – possible rebarrelling at A2 Tygstation, Goteborg.  The bore is excellent as expected and the action is just a pleasure.
