Carl Gustafs Scoped M1896 Rifle……..SOLD

Created on November 10th 2012

M96 with contemporary scope.

Full length Model 1896 Swedish Mauser by Carl Gustafs.  Serial number now located at rear of action on RHS as the original number has been covered by the base rail.  The scope is a fixed magnification contemporary piece with the standard German Post and Rail reticle.  It has a 26mm tube.  A 40mm object lense.  Measures 280mm long.  Thought to be of 4 times magnification.  Definitely constructed of steel then brass and blued.  The single adjustment tower on top for elevation has the number “19490” upon it.  The rear optical adjustment goes from -3 to +3 for correction of reticle focusing.  It comes with a contemporary well made leather set of lens covers.

All other components are correctly numbered with the rifles last three digits of the serial number.  The matching bolt is finished in the white, as is the follower for the magazine.  The bolt handle has been turned down and has a relief cut-out on the elbow to clear the scope.  The mount although numbered “54” on some parts appears to be a later fitting as the blueing is very good.  It has two locking turn-over fastenings to secure the unit in place and thee is windage adjustment in at the rear.

The breech is clearly marked with the crowned “CG cypher / CARL GUSTAFS STADS /GEVARFAKTORI / 1904”  On the side wall of the receiver is still visible the factory inspectors initials “K.B”  Captain Konrad Berglund was Chief Inspection Officer at the Gustafs plant from 1902 to 1905.  The serial number on the side matches records for 1904.

The rifle is chambered in 6.5 x 55 Swedish.  It is a 5-shot internal magazine weapon with Mauser bolt system. It measures 51.1/8″ overall.  Including flash hider the barrel is 31″ in overall length.  All the bolts components are marked with the last three digits of the serial number.  The rifle has the conventional ladder rear sights, numbered to the rifle.  It has the correct later fitted sprung fore-sight protector.

Excellent stock with brass bore condition disk fitted the RHS.  Two sling mounts and original supple leather sling with triple crown marking.  Cleaning rod AF.  Bore good with mechanically sound superbly smooth action.  Accuracy excellent.

A good entry level rifle to get into classic sniper rifles with.
