M1896 Swedish Mauser……………….SOLD

Created on December 6th 2011

A Fine Carl Gustafs built M96 Swedish Mauser

49.1/2″ in length.  The barrel 29″ long. Serial number 209026.

Full length light walnut finger groove stock with handguard.  Standard Mauser action with 5-shot integral magazine.  Straight hand bolt with flag safety.  The bolt and magazine follower are finished in the white with all components numbered with last three digits of serial number and marked with the swedish inspectors crown – applied horizontally.

The breech is marked with the Carl Gustafs crowned “CG” cypher over “CARL GUSTAFS STADS / GEVARSFAKTORI / 1907”.   The RHS of the sidewall is marked with the serial number and the initials of the cheif inspector at the factory; “J.V.”   Paul Jacques Robert Virgin was inspector at the factory from 1905 to 1911.  He later went on to be director of the factory from 1911 to 1933.

The rear sights are numbered  to another rifle and apart from the un-numbered cleaning rod are the only components not matching on this weapon.  A good degree of finish remains on most of the rifle, the main wear being high edge wear and a slight thinning on parts like the numbered magazine floor plate.  The steel butt plate is grey with no finish. Some components which have taken honest wear from usage are showing loss of finish, like the two sling swivels, and the sprung nitre blue bolt release catch.  The stock shows the dings and dents of honest usage and has a good patina to it with no obvious signs of refinishing.  There is one more serious dent on the top of the wrist which looks to have been there for some time but does not detract from the rifle as a whole.

The RHS of the butt stock has the standard single brass bore condition disk.  The bore is good with strong rifling and the action mechanically fine.
