Swedish M41/B Sniper Rifle………SOLD

Created on November 21st 2012

A good post-war example of the famous M41/B Swedish Sniper Rifle.

This is the post-war “improved” M41/B rifle and scope.  Standard, but selected model 1896 rifle.  The rifles were selected for superior performance.  The rifle is 49″ in overall length.  It has a 29″ round blued barrel with four lands and four grooves.  The twist rate is 1 in 7.1/2″.  It has the standard Mauser action with five round internal magazine.  The main difference in the action is that the bolt is blued and the bolt handle turned over, to avoid the scope.  The other obvious change is the attachment of the short side-rail base.  This is attached by three main screws, set by three smaller ones, then with two steel pins through the fixed base to eliminate any movement – even over time.  It also clearly has the adjustable recoil stop on the front of the rail.

The breech is marked “WAFFENFABRIK / MAUSER / OBERNDORF A/N  /1900”  The serial number on the action side wall is obscured by the base rail, but the number has been marked onto the rail and reads “42404”  That number is then repeated on the upper mount.  All the bolt components have the matching “404”, other parts do not.

Additionally, the standard ladder rear sight has been replaced by the correct fitment of the “S.M.  Sikte  m/55” micrometer sight.  The foresight has the correct sprung metal cover in position to protect it in the field.

The scope is an Ajack 4 x 90 unit, retro fitted in 1955.  On the ranging turret are the following markings; ” Swedish crown (inspectors mark for the scope)  Nr 2417 (scopes serial number) 1942 B”   The “B” means retrofitted in 1955.  The ranging turret is set on top with a locking screw and is graduated from 100 to 800 meters.  Towards the rear is the dioptic adjustment ranging from -3 to +3.  The Object lens measures 40mm and the ocular lens 37mm.  The optics are just brilliant!  with a standard German retecule within.  Windage adjustment if required is by a screw at the rear of the mount which moves the scope from side to side.  The rubber waterproofing tube is present but split and so not pictured.  Original leather scope covers included.  The object lens end of the scope still has affixed, an inspection sticker, in Swedish which reads “Oversyn / Gv:optik / Karlskrona”

The scope comes in a can with what appears to be the serial number of the rifle on the lid.  This is the classically odd shaped tin which also houses the mount and has a piece of leather glued with in to deaden the sound produced when on the move, and also protect the scope.  The mount is produced to slide on to the lower rail and simply lock into place with the aid of the large lever on the side. This stops all further movement.

Magazine floor-plate and cleaning rod finished in the white.  The stock shows dents and dings from some field use, as would be expected.  Underneath the wrist of the stock are three Swedish inspectors stamps.  The central one is older and most be the original inspection mark and the two outside stamps, which are clearer must be from the sniper conversion in 1955.

A chance to be lucky enough to own one of the best Sniper outfits produced in the last century.
