All these K31 rifles are of standard specification but the stocks have been re-finished, the entire mechanism cleaned and the rifle reproofed.  Each rifle has an excellent bore and the mechanisms are fine, the only discernible difference between the them is cosmetic; the minor wear, externally, on each of them.  The stocks are all hardwoods and in fine condition.  Whilst they were disassembled photos were taken of matching numbers on the hand-guards and stock for-end in each case.

Also discovered whilst apart were the last troopers name tags left under the butt-plates. This is common to the Swiss rifles and was to aid repatriation with their owners if discovered on a tram or train etc.  Only one rifle was without its tag, that was f483. The following description stands for all the rifles, they are practically identical.  All the rifles are 7.5mm Swiss in caliber.

The more observant will note that the numbers on the action wall are all stamped in slightly different fonts, even the two made in the same year !  This could either be a hint that they were made in different factories or that one may have been arsenal overhauled.  The rifles are 43.1/2″ long.  The round barrels are approx 25.1/4″ long.  Each receiver ring has the last three digits of the serial number pressed into it ( visible with the furniture in place ) Also on the same ring are factory and inspectors marks.

All the bolts are serial numbered on the bright polished steel bodies to match the rifles.  Common to most parts on all the rifles are the stylized Swiss cross acceptance marks and on each blued receiver is a bold shield with the Swiss Cross in the center.  All the straight-pull bolt handles are the plain aluminium type which is correct for the K31.  The all have the simple ring-pull cocking piece at the rear of the bolt. This doubles as the safety when turned  through 90 degrees from the 6 o’clock  to the 9 o’clock position.  Simple and easy to use once you are used to it.

Each K31 is equipped with a detachable 6-round box magazine which also clearly carries the rifles serial number on the base.  There is a simple magazine release catch on the RHS of each magazine.  Also on the RHS is the bolt release catch which is easily pressed down to enable the bolt to be withdrawn.  The K31 has a contoured steel but-plate, these have all lost their “blue”.  The strap is side mounted on a bar which is let into the LHS of the butt. (No straps included)  This in turn is mirrored by the rear blued barrel band having a side mounted sling swivel.  The front barrel band carries a lug for the bayonet underneath and a stacking hook which enable the rifle to stand in threes as in the photo at the top. – Always wanted to do that !

The rear sight is graduated from 100 to 1500 meters but has no windage adjustment.  The front sight is protected by “ears”, is a blade type designed to be slide across and angled channel, thus providing room for adjustment. Usually the butt is marked with a small Swiss shield branded into the RHS and the hand-guard with the same.  In restoring the later one may have lost its brand in the removal of damaged material.  All the hardwood stocks have staggered finger grooves and semi-pistol grips.

This is an opportunity to obtain Swiss perfection in almost as issued condition.  The bores are excellent, with four groove right-hand twist rifling.  Accurate shooting available at a fraction of the cost of modern accurate shooting.
