Enfield No 9 Royal Navy Training Rifle….(F 923) SOLD

Extremely Rare No 9 R.F.N. .22 Training Rifle

One of only 3000 rifles converted at Parker-Hale  for the Royal Nay between 1956 and 1960.  The serial number and other markings put it  towards the end of this limited batch.  One of the last to be made as Enfields’ were no longer being produced; this one is within 127 from the end of the run.  Built from the standard No 4 of various marks, these were requested as single shot weapons, in a full size No 4 rifle.  Consequently, the magazine bears no more function other than to collect empty cases once shot.  It is devoid of its “guts.”

A standard No 4 of 44″ overall length.  The round barrel measuring a nominal 25″ in length.  The rifle having a Pull length of 13.1/4″ to centre.  Fully stocked in a light hardwood with blued and painted Sercote finishes.  The action side wall is marked as follows; “.22 R.F.N. 9 MK I / P – H’ 60   /  A 2873.”  The rear of the bolt arm shows the same serial number so components are matching.  This rifle was converted in 1960 as one of the last.  The sleeved muzzle shows the correct marking of “PARKERFIELD / A.P.G.”  Also matching is the serial number on the front of the fore-end underside, where the serial number is repeated.  The cross-bolt just in front of the wrist socket has had timber inserts added around it – this is also correct for this rifle.  Fluted handguard and brass butt-plate with trap for cleaning equipment.  Standard 1300 yard flip-up rear sights with the added 25 yd mark.

Rifle comes “as is” with all the dents and digs of a military life showing in the woodwork.  No attempt has been made to alter finishes or over clean this example as it is such an rare and important example of the Enfield story.  Action is mechanically sound.  What is highly notable about this particular example is the high condition of the bore – it appears to be extremely good.  It is very clean and in great condition with no apparent pitting of misting.  Rifling groves are strong and deep with sharp edges.   The rifle comes with a standard webbing British Military sling and an empty steel box magazine with another weapons serial number upon it.

What a chance to secure a very rare rifle.  This is the first one I have handled in 13 years plus trading and twenty years collecting.
