Interesting No4 Trainer in .22 LR

Standard military configuration for a No 4 Mk 1/2 except for barrel and sights.  Blond beech stock-work with blackened metal fittings.  The barrel however has no bayonet lugs as some were produced purely as target trainers on No 7 rifles.  This rifle started life as a full-bore version in .303 with a ten shot box magazine.  “R.O.F.” markings upon LH butt socket indicate production was at Fazakerley.  The serial number which remains the same is on the same and reads “G 23804A” This number is repeated on the rear of the bolt arm.  At the point of conversion to “/2″ specification details were then engraved upon the outer LH action wall and read originally as follows:- ” No 4 MK1 /2 (F) FTR /53 G28304A”  Then at a later date still, the 4 was overstruck with a 7 and .22 was added at the end of the first line.

Does that make it a No 7.  In my opinion No but its a darn close second as it has the correct barrel fitted with no bayonet lugs.  Also it is difficult to say the least to stamp markings into a hardened receiver after the fact unless you either have very sharp tools or really know what you are doing.  So it looks like this was an in armoury conversion done after 1953.  The rifle also bears the simple word “ENGLAND” which suggests it was sold to a foreign or commonwealth government.

To add to the features which come as this rifle the correct Parker-hale sight has been fitted.  So, with its combined weight, excellent sight and correct barrel this rifle should make an efficient user of ammunition.  To add to this the rifle has been re-stocked in the latest available(1950’s) Beech stock, which is practically mint apart from the acceptance marks behind the trigger guard.

The magazine is an empty shell and purely collects empties. Serrated trigger.  Rectangular cocking piece.  Brass butt-plate with trap for cleaning equipment.  The butt-stock shows a solitary “L” for Long on top.  This is quite possibly an official conversion as so many of the parts check out as correct for the rifle.  Rear sight is a Parker-Hale PH5-C aperture target sight with full adjustment and variable apertures.  Front sight guarded by ears.  Very good clean bore with strong un-interrupted rifling.  Freshly CIP proofed.  In fine condition and ready to go.
