Mauser “Sporting” Rifle with suspiciously Military type sights

Superbly built quality Mauser bolt action rifle.  There’s not much to get wrong with this kind of rifle but never-the-less there are companies who have got it wrong but that certainly doesn’t apply to this beautifully built Mauser.  After World War One Germany was forbidden from building up military arms as part of the treaty of Versailles.  When Hitler started to re-arm his forces his government instructed the arms factories to start surreptitiously building weapons that were supposedly allowed by the treaty.  However, in preparation of things to come, some features, common to the K98, rifle were included on these.

Aspects of the its full bore brother to come were included on these rifles, to help acclimatise the soldiers of the future Wehrmacht with the weapons they would be using.  So the sights are an accurate copy of the standard K98 battle rifle sights.  Even the geometry of sight positioning was duplicated.  The sight picture is exactly the same. The rifles were made to be purposely heavy to simulate the weight of the K.   Some rifles have even been seen with iron weights drilled into the butt to further replicate this effect.  The action and trigger are merely a scaled-down version of its larger brothers.  The barrel is also unduly heavy – however, this has the effect of producing an extremely accurate rifle in .22LR.  The stock is even specially selected dense walnut – to add to the weight.  Of course with extra dense timber you usually get finer figuring and therefore a far more attractive stock – as with this example.

This little Sporter actually measures a nominal 45.1/4″ in total length.  The round blued barrel is 26.3/4″ long and the trigger pull is 14″ to centre.  All of these dimensions are around the same as a standard K98k rifle.  Standard Mauser bolt system with three position flag safety to rear.  Single shot.  Single piece semi-pistol grip stock – highly figured with a definite stripe.  Usual bolt release catch to rear LHS of action.  Metal trigger guard and serrated trigger. Smooth steel butt-plate with Mauser banner.

The rifle carries a serial number on the LHS of the breech end of the barrel; “154686” and adjacently upon the action.  Plain Mauser banner on top of action.  On the LHS of the action are the words; “MAUSER-WERKE A.G.  OBERNDORF.”  There are clear “BUG” proofs and the words; “PATRONE 22 LONG RIFLE”  on the same side of the barrel.  One the obverse of the barrel are the initials; “D.R.P.D.R.G.M.”  This is reference to the protection of patents in Germany.  Superb dense figure European Walnut stock with stripes in both the butt and the fore-end.  Forward sling swivel A/F.  Excellent bore with no pitting or misting. Rifling complete and having some depth still – this should make an excellent shooter. High edge wear to bluing but generally strong all over for its age.

At a mid point on the LHS of the fore-end is a stamping into the timber which reads: “L.KNAPPWORST .  BRAUNSCHWEIG.”   This is the name of the Gun shop which retailed the rifle – This shop is still in business with the same family in Braunschweig, Germany today.
