 WZ 78 Training Rifle.

Successor to the WZ48 the WZ78 was built by the Wifama Textile Machine Company and was officially designated the KBKS (Short Military Training Rifle) Wz. 78.  A simple well built bolt action magazine fed .22 calibre trainer.  This example has a heavy barrel and rear sights that would more at home on a regular Mosin-Nagant.  Serial number “B00692” roll-stamped into the action and repeated on the bright cylindrical bolt body and the rear sight block.  There are further digits adjacent to the main serial number which are not repeated elsewhere which I do not believe are meant to be taken as part of the serial number but they are “1990” – although they are exactly the same typeface.

Three-quarter length beech sporting style stock with pistol grip and heavy Beaver-type fore-end. The rifle is 44.1/8″ in overall length.  The heavy weight round blued barrel is 26″ long and the trigger pull is 13.3/4″ to centre.  This can be adjusted to fit the user by a screw accessed through a specially drilled hole in the LHS of the stock.  The straight stack magazine carries another serial number electro-pencilled into its side which is not far away from the weapons actual serial number “B00709”.

The top of the action carries a distinct dovetail which would take a scope mount.  The front sight resembles more of the type found on an early BSA target rifle and looks to be interchangeable if one had access to the rest of the kit.  The front post is adjustable on a thread and is guarded by protective ears.  As mentioned earlier the rear sights would look far more at home on a full sized Mosin-Nagant but this was obviously the object of the exercise, in that it prepared the novice shooter for the full size battle rifle they would move on to.  It is graduated from 25 to 100 meters and has sliding ramp adjustment.  Both front and rear sights seem to be quick detachable so a scope could be quickly mounted and training on glass could progress.

Cylindrical bolt body with safety to rear and straight bolt arm.  Large plastic trigger guard possibly to allow access with thick gloves on.  Bolt body is finished as polished steel with the balance being blued (black) Handsome, strong blue to action and barrel.  Mechanically fine.  The bore is in very good condition with strong uninterrupted rifling, no pitting or misting.  Another fine addition to the training rifle collectors armoury – Not to be missed.  Fresh CIP proofs applied.
