Smith & Wesson Model 1.1/2 or “1.1/2 New Model”

This neat little revolver is know as the Second Issue, was an improvement on the First Issue. Approximately 100700 second issue units were produced between 1868 -1875.  A far more ergonomically considered pistol than its predecessor with many more rounded edges and surfaces. This allowed for a swifter draw with less hang-ups when required.  The sharp edges and squared-off butt were replaced with rounded surfaces and a Birds-head type grip.  All in all the pistol fills the hand in a more satisfying way, even when not firing the weapon.

The revolver is chambered in .32 rim-fire long with a five-shot fluted cylinder.  This particular revolver has the slightly longer 3.1/2″ barrel  with a raised rib.  This carries the following stamping; “SMITH & WESSON, SPRINGFIELD MASS, PATT APR, 8, 55, JULY,5,59…..”  The revolver is in its original blue finish with rosewood grips.  On the base of the grip strap is the serial number; “42249”.

Unlike the previous model, the cylinder lock up is located in the top strap, and still operates perfectly with correct timing.  The revolver breaks by pulling upwards on the catch located at the base of the frame in front of the cylinder.  This allows the frame to tip up so the process of reloading may be carried out.  The bore is good with strong rifling and some small patches of shallow pitting.  The main hinge is in fine condition with no signs of damage or repair.  The hammer spur is cross hatched to aid grip as is the barrel release catch  and the front face of the concealed trigger. Half moon fore-sight is set into top of rib at muzzle.

Finish is consummate with age, all over.  Main loss occurring about the length of the barrel, frame is stronger.  Grips are fine with good aged patina – no chipping.  Side-plate flush and undisturbed.  Mechanism is in good order and functions correctly with positive lock-up and correct timing.  The revolver comes in a compartmentalised period wood case with lock, (key A/F)  The case being lined with plum velvet showing signs of wear suggesting the pistol has been with the case for some time as depressions match.  Also contained within the case is a pewter oil bottle and a rosewood handled screwdriver. Vacant escutcheon in top of lid.

The complete set has the air of a time capsule about it.  A nice antique vintage collectible in good honest condition.
